MORE ABOUT WINTER SOLSTICE…
The silent nights are drawing near as we descend into the darkness -- the exhale -- of the year. This is a time of deep reflection, releasing, unwinding, offering… before the time of renewal. Winter Solstice, also known as Yule, is the longest night of the year in the northern hemisphere, and is the turning point for the season of Winter.
Solstice, derived from the word sistere, means “stationary” or “sun stands still.” It happens when the sun reaches its minimum elevation in the sky and so it seems that the sun doesn’t move and the days are short.
Cultures around the world have long held fire and light ceremonies and festivals to celebrate the turning of dark into light, the rebirth of the sun. The symbolism of this natural shift from darkness into growing light is one of renewal, inspiration, exaltation, hope, peace and joy.
Many of the symbols we see during this time of the year correlate directly with this natural cycle of rebirth. Festivals of lights, the evergreen tree that never dies, the wreath as the circle of life, the yule log of protection and triumph of light, and the holly for transformation.
Darkness is often shrouded with negativity, fear or evil, but as we see in nature -- magnificence emerges from the darkness. Flowers and trees grow from the dark soil of the earth and new life births from the dark womb of the mother. The paradox of this season lies in its chaos—shopping, parties, gifts, and social gatherings—while, in truth, it is a time for retreat, solace, contemplation, and preparation for the renewed light ahead.
We welcome you into the dark, silent, holy night of Winter Solstice.
